Where will this knowledge ever truly affect our lives? I present to you here a concrete reason: we cannot prevent that which we do not know. Oft said is the phrase "history repeats itself," but is this true?

In Three Cups of Tea, the bombing of the World Trade Center sparked a terrible influx of hate-mail to Greg Mortenson because, in the majority of the public's eyes, he was aiding terrorism. "The terrorists were Muslim, so all Muslims are terrorists," their flawed logic concluded.

An elderly woman mailed Mortenson with a very different opinion. "I'm old enough to remember this nonsense from World War II," she wrote, referring to the downright racist hatred many Americans felt for the Middle East, "when we turned on all the Japanese..." Through a parallel she drew between World War II and the War on Terror, it is made apparent that history does indeed repeat itself, and that if people do not take the time to learn it, to realize the cause and effect of this long chain of dominoes calle Life, then we will suffer the repercussions.

My humanities teacher told me that she was on the bus and heard the ignorant solution of someone who was either clueless or truly racist. One man to his friend suggested that any and every Muslim be put into concentration camps as a solution to terrorism. As a student fresh out of a World War I and II unit, my immediate reaction was "Wouldn't that be just as bad as what Hitler did to the Jews?"

Her solemn response was "Exactly."

QQC #2

As I continued reading Three Cups of Tea, a book that, for the most part, highlights how the religion of Islam is not an evil thing as most Americans believe, I found it odd that, on page 110, there was a quote that clearly delineated one of the major differences between our cultures. Mortenson is being described a religious pardon that allows a married man to be temporarily "married" to a different woman, and thus be sanctioned by Allah to do certain things that are usually reserved for spouses only. "Mortenson asked if Balti women... could also be granted muthaa.
"No, of course not," Changazi said, waggling his head at the naivete of Mortenson's question..." At first I wondered why this was in the book at all- was it not rather counter-productive to the positive image the author had worked so hard to portray of the Muslim world? As I thought it through, I realized that it was honest. Because this small snippet was included, the book became that much more credible in my eyes. Instead of preaching all of what we Americans know as false and biased, it showed a grain of truth in the disparity between men and women in Muslim culture.

QQC: Chapters 1-3

Quote: "When it is dark enough, you can see the stars."

Question: How does this apply to the story?

Comment:
In all of this section of the book, the portions that really stand out to me are the quotes used to introduce each chapter. The very first one invoked vivid imagery in my mind, brought back memories of truly seeing the stars for the first time. "When it is dark enough, you can see the stars." I was walking to the bathroom late one night on a camping trip, picking my way carefully across a prickly field of rocks and weeds, for I had foolishly forgotten to slip on a pair of shoes. Cursing myself under my breath, I shook my hair out of my face. As I looked upwards, I was struck dumb by the sight before me: the sky was so swollen with stars that it was not the deep, velvety black that I was accustomed to, but blue. There were so many stars that it was almost an artificial twilight, sans sun. To this day, it remains one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

The quote also applies to the storyline of the book- a destitute village, conceivably in its darkest hour, finds hope in the form of a scruffy mountaineer on his last legs. Even when things seem terrible, good can happen.

CHARACTER: Dr. Polo

We're doing a video project in school, and we had to use an organization-chart to develop our main character...

CHARATER: Dr. Polo

AGE: middle of successful career as psychologist

MAIN TRAIT: eager, NERD

HUMANIZING TRAIT: Naive, passionate

PROFESSION: psychologist

ADDRESS: messy middle-class home (papers strewn about EVERYWHERE), has an old '62 convertible beatle

VALUES: work, bettering mankind

FOIL: his colleague/supervisor

OBSESSION: bettering the world (picks up litter, donates to charities, gives bums money)

GOAL: to perfect his brainwashing technique to make criminals good

IDOL: Albert Einstein

EPITAPH: "for the greater good" changes to "Preserving mankind"

INTERNAL CONFLICTS: wants to leave an achievement behind to be remembered by; The premise is that man figured how to create androids that looked exactly like people and were as intelligent as people, but stronger. They also had a limited lifespan of four years. Replicants were used as slaves, especially on colony worlds.
What went wrong is that the robots- replicants, as they're called- went rouge and killed lots of people, proving that artificial intelligence can be more than just a little scary. A nuance of the movie that I noticed is that they had an experimental replicant who was created with a flase set of memories of life- a childhood and whatnot. She was human- the only thing setting her apart from other women being her inevitable short lifespan.

Interesting. With scarcity, prices rise, and now we are starving, cut off from the outside world by a paranoid government and cut off from food by a lack in our pocketbooks.

So we assess our options:
Sit idle and watch our lives decay, wither, die.

Or

Attempt to overthrow our useless government, try and get the one thing everyone in this world shares a need of- food.

In the meantime...
We cinch our belts a notch tighter
Ignore the churn in our gut
And pray for release from this living hell.

The Life and Times of a Hunter/Gatherer...

...I have the biggest urge to be really sarcastic and make cave-paintings to express this assignment (a journal entry of a day in the life of a hunter/gatherer...), for I've never like these fake-journal things... but ANYWAY...

~Day 12 of the Seventh Moon Cycle~

The great move has started. I thought my idol and fav player was Yngwie Malmsteen, but... Rhandy is just... wow. Not faster, but... better. *shrugs* So I have this awesome issue of Guitar Legends. And it's great. It makes me happy. It's got tabs and interviews, so I know more about him and I can be all inspired...

I dunno. It's cool to get to see a little piece of your heroe's life and be all, "...Wow. I can do this, I can make it, too." Sure, I gotta work at it, but everyone has their dreams. I want to write music, I want to have people go, "Oh, yeah, I have that album by her! She's awesome!" Or at least "She's good."

One of the worst things someone ever did to me was laugh at me when I said I wanted to be a musician- a rock star, I always say, to give people the 'short answer.' (It's hard to explain what I trully strive for, and it takes too long)

I looked her in the eye and told her that she has no right to squash my dreams, that they're mine and mine alone, and she can't change that. Don't let anyone take your dreams, 'cuz when you think about it, they're all you've got. They're all you'll ever have. You can be stripped of your posessions, they can think you're a fool, you can maybe never manage to fulfill them, but as long as you hold on, they can never break your soul, 'cuz you'll have hope.

So while some people dream of going to heaven, I dream of making music, sweet, sweet music, that is all my own.

"They say that no one is irreplaceable. In most of these great stories, the line between the two is thick and black, as if drawn by a Sharpie.
Unfortunately, this line isn't quite so defined in photography. What makes a photo good? This whole post is an attempt to try and compare two photos that I've taken (a few minutes ago, actually!) and see what makes a bad photo, or a good one.
Before I begin, let me make it very clear that I am by no means a professional photographer, nor have I had any training! Be easy on me!

GOOD:

It's got an interesting perspective, it's subject is interesting. It's lightsource isn't overbearing. One doesn't look at this image and think it's terrible. I actually do like Mulan... I am just dissecting it cruelly and callously to prove my point.]}

We watched bits and pieces of Mulan today in class today, to try and analyze how media affects the way we see the world (media, by the way, is a way of communicating to a wide audience. Think magazine ads, billboards, pictures, movies, books, poetry... the possibilities are endless!). Before I begin, let us stop and think about what Mulan is: a Disney film- created in America. A form of media.
Throughout the movie, different aspects of- not the Chinese culture, per say, but what Disney WANTS us to think of the Chinese culture- are portrayed, such as honor, masculine dominance, the beautiful and obedient child-bearing (movie says "bear sons," actually) slaves the men want their women to be, their strict obedience to superiors, their fear of invasion. We unknowingly take this little slice of "China" and believe it to be true. For every bit of China put into it, there is something else left out- footbinding, for instance. It was a sign of highest wealth to deform your daughter's feet to be "small and dainty like the lotus blossom" so that she was unable to walk, to work. Disney never mentions any of that, and I was very unpleasantly surprised to learn the more gruesome details of the culture in later years, when I had watched Mulan as a young, impressionable child.
Yet we never wonder why things are called "the Disney version." Did you know that the evil queen in Snow White sent out a huntsman to cut out Snow White's heart? Feeling pity for the child, he instead returned with the heart of a boar (which the Queen ate, thinking it belonged to Snow White). As a reader of Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales, I find little inconsistencies throughout the little girl's world of princesses and fables. Heh- media fooled them with edited tales of princesses, added color, and sound, thus fooling all but those who tackle the daunting, thick volume of the true ones on later years.

Have I convinced you of the power of media? Take a look at an average diamond commercial- boy likes hot chick, boy buys hot chick shiny rock, hot chick tackles boy and smothers with kisses.
Subliminal message: if I buy her these diamond-things, I get sex.
Even the whole diamond industry is manipulated- a company called Zales fooled people into making these things of higher value than they otherwise would be (diamonds are very common stones, dear). And, after all, Diamonds_Are_a_Girl's_Best_Friend, no? Music is media, too.

Wow.
All these subliminal messages being crammed into my head without even knowing it...

confusion is synonimous to growing up

So...

If breaking the rules and throwing a fit over your punishment is considered childish...
Is maturity realizing you deserve your punishment and feeling guilty for breaking the rules in the first place?

Does this mean I'm finally growing up?

Are these just growing pains?

And (if they are)...

when
will
they
stop?

How CAN I help...

...How can I help the US/Mexico border?

My skills are in writing (be it poetry or prose or even my essay papers), music ('cello and guitar and a little singing), art, giving speeches with passion... It can also be hastily categorizing someone before you've gathered enough info to truly know who they are inside. A soul isn't visible, you know.

"Oh, it's just because he's Mexican."
"Stupid white trash."
"Girls can't do it."
"You metal-head."

Stereotypes can screw a person up. Maybe the separation from fief to fief became so much more; maybe someone drew the distinction between each fief on a map and they got changed into borders.

Is it a result of man's want of control? Maybe one person wanted to run his little world a certian way, and a different person disagreed. If the first man just went off into his own country and did as he pleased, the other person should leave him alone, right?

Even in my own life, I get angered if people encroach upon my room- think of it as my country, as my little brother and sister pretend it is when we play Legos. If the ruler of LegoLand (Steven, lol, we actually DO call it that...) breaches my border (my room) without my explicit permission, I usually drag him out or scare him away (I can be very scary, you know...). It's MY place, my private space to be alone, to think, to dream.

Seems that borders are the best way for an untrusting society to find some semblance of comfort, a sense of a (maybe?) false security. Or maybe just to find some peace and quiet from the rest of the world.
I leave the judgement up to you- as far as I can see, borders work pretty darn well at the moment...

This... feeling...

I have this... feeling... that I was supposed to post something here for Kay...

OH YEEEEAAAAH- I remember now! *I was smart and e-mailed it to myself*

ON WEDNESDAY...
I was one of the few people to do my homework over the three-day weekend. Still gotta find something for #1. Might do it in the morning, I feel like a I deserve a good shower after a double dose of flag football today...

I hate trying to research concepts and not straight information on the web all the while not being allowed to use Wikipedia, Kay. This whole project has been an "Aargh" for me, resulting in slamming my head on the table, procrastinating, or having my friend magically find the webpage I need while I take a bathroom break...
Grar.
But I won't give up, 'cuz (and this is my adaptation of something I heard once)...

There was once a king who had been torn up inside terribly by lies, by deciet. Unable to see an end to his torment, he called to his most trusted wiseman, the one who had raised him, the one who had stood by him through the kingdom's upheaval, the one who had been there the day the king had cast his own brother into exile for high treason. Raising his tearstained visage to the sage, the king commanded him, "Tell me something that will forever ring true."

The old man pondered the concept for a while, and asked for some time to think, which he was granted.

The wiseman, desperate to see his lord smile again, called forth a great council of every philosopher, every scholar, every historian in the kingdom to answer the desperate query. Chaos ensued the minute the meeting began, and the wiseman, having developed a headache, stepped outside for a moment's quiet.

He slumped against a wall, frustrated with his lack of solution. An ancient woman shuffled by, and, noticing his distress, asked what was amiss. "What's wrong, m'dearie?" The wiseman told the old maid his woes, and she chuckled, patting him on the arm. "Have no fear..."

"...In time, this too will pass," the proud wiseman declared to his king.

He was rewarded with the first smile the king had adorned in a great, long while. "Too true, too true..."

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHH I'm gonna present this tomorrow...

CRAP!!! *so totally remembered... ehehe...*

ACK! I TOTALLY SPACED ON THIS UNTIL LIKE... RIGHT NOW!
-calms down-
Sorry, Kay. Anyway...

New question: How do Mexico and the United States negatively affect each other? In my head, a whole host of negative effects spring from the fact that TJ is sort of a slum. Lots of poor people congregate on the border, trying to sneak in to America. A lot of crime is caused by it- remember the reading we had last week? It describes TJ as this terrible place- full of disease, of violence, of theft.
But I think that TJ is a slum just because it is next to the border (meaning the US hurts Mexico, too). The sorts of people who would be doing the things that make TJ bad just want in to the US- if we bordered, say, Africa, I believe some of the same things would be happening. It is caused by people wanting the good things we have here.
Lots of the crossers come over to use some of our amenities, such as the education, or the health care system. As in Breaking Through, some come over to actually get jobs. This can cause issues- the systems are paid for and ready to accomidate the tax payers, but if one doesn't live in the US and one takes advantage of these systems... problems arise.

A Change in Policy

http://www.usconstitution.net/consttop_lang.html
SO!
In Humanities, we are going to be debating on a policy that the USA currently has with Mexico that should be changed or a new policy that should be introduced.

I am of the persuasion that English should become the official language of the United States. It could be like the case of Maya and Alejandro from the popular TV series Heroes- they need to seek medical attention.

It’s hard to look at this as an American, living in America, heck, never having been outside of the country except through my television set (thanks for another whopper of a question, Kay!). From what I hear, from what I see, from what I read, from what I know of the world, it’s pretty great over here.
Really great.
So great, people would be willing to give up their past lives, be willing to uproot from their birthplace, from the land of their fathers and their father’s fathers just to have a chance at all of this wonder, this opportunity, this freely-given potential.

It may be out on a tangent, but in most other countries, education is not provided for by the government. I wish I could say it breaks my heart to see some, if any, of my classmates not realize the chance they’ve been given and to take this “boring school thing” for granted, but all it does is irritate me.
The man who taught me how to play ‘cello used to get upset and lecture people who bummed about like that; called it the “American Brat Syndrome.” Boy, could he go at it, too- the worst part of it was the utter truth to it. How we’re lucky to be in America, and how the kids he once taught in Nepal (I believe he was in the Conservation Corps) had barely anything, how they ate up the chance to learn like it was ambrosia. All of it would have started, of course, when someone didn’t practice when they should have, or no one was bothering to take the instruments home…

A Little Difficult, Actually...

There's a giant fence in southern California, which makes up the US/Mexico border. Seriously. That thick black line on the maps isn't lying to you, my friends. The fence divides TJ (which I can see from my backyard) and California. I've never been to TJ- ever. Not even for a short jaunt. This makes it a bit difficult for me to do my humanities homework, "Why are things different when you cross the U.S.-Mexico border?"

I would think the first difference would be the language. The official language of the USA is English, while people in Mexico speak Spanish. Mexico was once a Spanish colony, while the US started out as an English colony, so the colonists each brought their own country's language with them.

Money would be different to, I suppose. The American government and the Mexican government are two separate entities; therefore they have different standards for currency than one another.

Culture can act as a wall, too. The culture of the US is different than that of Mexico, meaning that (overall) we eat different food, wear different clothes, tell different folktales, create different art, sing different songs. Culture is a huge makeup of any individual, and trying to understand someone else’s can cause a huge divide, be it from being incapable of seeing eye to eye or not believing it worth while to.

Dunno. I have heard of all sorts of differences from people in class who have been across the border, but I haven't, making this a little difficult, actually...

Tadaa!

Well...
I made a blog.
I'll add more later...
